Across the 2,000 audiobooks in our dataset, genre is the single clearest length signal. Thriller tops the table at an average of 12.9 hours per book; romance sits at the bottom with 9 — a 43% gap between the two.

The gap, genre by genre

Average listening hours by genre (hrs)
  1. Romantasy (derived)121 books13.1 hrs
  2. Thriller259 books12.9 hrs
  3. Fantasy761 books12.3 hrs
  4. Mystery161 books9.1 hrs
  5. Romance819 books9 hrs

In finish-time terms, that gap is the difference between a two-week commitment and a three-week one: at 45 minutes of listening a day, the average romance audiobook takes 12 days to finish and the average thriller takes 18.

Averages vs medians

Averages hide shape. Romance shows the widest gap between its average (9 hrs) and its median (6.6 hrs) — 36% apart. In plain terms: the typical romance audiobook is shorter than the average suggests, and a long tail of very long titles pulls the average up.
